The Collaborative Research Centre “Iron – upgraded!” – How to sustainably shape the future

In CRC 1487 “Iron, upgraded!” from the RMU profile area “Matter”, scientists explore how iron can serve as a sustainable alternative to critical or rare elements. The aim is to precisely control the properties and reactivity of iron for applications in catalysis, fuel cells and magnetic materials.

The CRC 1487 has just reached a significant milestone: In May, the German Research Foundation (DFG) extended funding for the CRC and is currently funding “Iron, upgraded!” in its second funding period until the end of 2029. 

CRC 1487 involves all three Rhine-Main Universities Goethe University Frankfurt, Johannes Gutenberg University Mainz and Technical University of Darmstadt, Heidelberg University, Paderborn University, the University of Bayreuth and Technical University of Munich, as well as the MPI for Chemical Energy Conversion. 

In the  interview, spokesperson Professor Ulrike Kramm of TU Darmstadt explains what makes “Iron, upgraded!” so unique, speaks about the successes already achieved, future projects and the advantages of the RMU alliance for the CRC.
