Participants will learn about essential strategies and trends in the world of academic publishing. Designed specifically for post-doctoral researchers, this workshop aims to equip participants with the tools and insights they need to successfully publish their research while navigating the evolving landscape of academic publishing. Through a combination of presentations, discussions, and practical exercises, participants will learn how to create an effective publication strategy, understand different publishing cultures and peer-review processes, and stay up to date on the latest trends like open access and AI in publishing. Each part of the workshop includes dedicated time for questions and peer feedback.
Part I: Understanding academic publishing today
- Key stakeholders and market changes in academic publishing (Open access, open data, and open science, funding)
- Target groups and publishing channels (Preprint servers, directories, and repositories, the role of publishers and editorial boards)
- Journal impact factors vs. Altmetrics: measuring research impact
- Peer review processes: types and workflows (Identifying and avoiding predatory publishers)
Part II: Developing your individual publishing strategy with ease
- Understanding different publishing cultures
- Key components of an individual strategy
- Maximizing the impact of publications for an academic career
- Finding the right publisher(s) and/or journal(s)
- The role of AI in publishing
