Description: How can faculty recruitment processes be designed to promote equity, diversity, and inclusion? Drawing on the example of Canadian universities, this talk explores how Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion (EDI) principles are embedded in professorial recruitment and appointment processes. The presentation examines the standards and frameworks that guide recruitment, the practical tools and procedures used to support equitable decision-making, and the ways in which EDI principles are integrated into the work of faculties and search committees. It also discusses mechanisms for implementing and monitoring EDI requirements and the institutional structures that support their effective application. The talk offers practical insights into the Canadian approach to faculty recruitment and invites reflection on what other higher education systems can learn from these experiences.

Speaker: Dr. Arig al Shaibah

Arig al Shaibah is Associate Vice-President, Equity & Inclusion (AVPEI) at the University of British Columbia (Vancouver, Canada). She works across all Executive portfolios to champion strategic equity and anti-racism priorities and advance inclusive excellence at UBC. She also oversees the university’s Equity & Inclusion Office. Arig al Shaibah completed a Master of Public Administration, and a Doctorate in Education. In addition to her administrative appointment, she holds an Honorary Associate Professor role with the Department of Educational Studies.
