About us
Strong. Diverse. United.
With 58 large collaborative research projects of the German Research Foundation (DFG), 91,000 students, 16,200 faculty and staff, and 45 regional Non-University Research Institutes (NURIs), the RMU and Frankfurt Rhine-Main constitute one of the major centers for research, education and innovation in Europe. In each of our four Profile Areas Data, Health, Matter, and Society, we work at some of the most dynamic and pressing scientific frontiers and have internationally outstanding and highly relevant Research Focal Areas. For example, our Cluster of Excellence (CoE) Reasonable Artificial Intelligence (RAI) designs next-generation intelligent systems that are robust, explainable, adaptable, and aligned with human values. The CoE Cardio-Pulmonary Institute (CPI) integrates pioneering research along the brain‑heart‑lung axis to achieve breakthrough therapeutic innovation. Our Research Focal Area Sustainable Engineering and Processes integrates fundamental science with strong application orientation to achieve novel, sustainable solutions for energy conversion and chemical production. In our Area of Potential Doing Cultures: Historic and Linguistic Perspectives, which we have identified as a highly promising research area within the RMU, multi-disciplinary teams of researchers work together to illuminate how diverse societies have managed interaction, conflict, and transformation over time.
RMU not only boasts a rich and dynamic portfolio of collaborative research, but also an integrated and attractive study space, and extensive, high-level research infrastructures. Together, we support the careers of researchers and experts and operate as an alliance with lean and effective governance, as set out in a renewed cooperation agreement in 2025. Our track record includes competitive start-ups, influential policy dialogue, and effective public engagement. Hereby we contribute strongly to societal and economic transformation.
