Description
Balancing a doctoral program with parenthood is still not the norm in the academic system. Doctoral students with children navigate the tension between academic demands, family life, their relationships, and societal expectations—often under intense pressure and with little structural support. Juggling a dissertation, caregiving, paid work, and daily life often creates the feeling that time is perpetually scarce and that multiple roles must be fulfilled simultaneously. This interactive lecture sheds light on the unique challenges—as well as the opportunities for shaping—this phase of life. How do time constraints, mental strain, and the division of roles affect a relationship? What resources and strategies help balance family life with a doctoral program? And how can a doctoral program be given the space it needs in everyday family life—the space necessary for focused work—in the long term?
