16 Millimetre Film Archive

  • Humanities and Social Sciences

University celluloid film collections are rare and special in Germany. The 16mm collection has been gradually built up since the institute was founded in 1991. The collection of early cinema films (1895 to approx. 1918) forms a valuable foundation of the collection and consists almost exclusively of unique items, i.e., specially produced 16mm copies of restored 35mm color negatives from the Dutch EYE Film Institute. In addition, there are experimental films, classics of auteur cinema, and educational and scientific films.

In times of digitization of film production and reception, the collection of currently approx. 320 films emphasizes the relevance of analog film material. It is a highly valued resource for research and teaching, as well as an exceptional venue for practical archival work for students, especially those enrolled in the master's program “Film Culture: Archiving, Programming, Presentation.” The collection is made accessible to a wider public through film programs curated as part of the teaching program, cooperative exhibitions, and interdisciplinary projects.
