Art Collection of Goethe University

  • Humanities and Social Sciences

The university archives have been responsible for the university's art collection since 2004. The art collection is a disparate collection of bequests, donations, and purchases. In addition to numerous individual pieces, the collection includes furniture and everyday objects by architect and designer Ferdinand Kramer from his time as university architect. Ferdinand Kramer (1898–1985) was also responsible for acquiring works of art for the university. Since then, important works by HAP Grieshaber and E.W. Nay have become part of the art collection.

The provenance of the artworks has been determined and can be found in Arcinsys Hessen.

Individual works from the art collection are presented in the rooms and on the campuses of Goethe University, for example the stainless steel sculpture “Four Rectangles Oblique IV” (1984) by American artist George Warren Rickey (1907–2002) on the Riedberg campus, the limestone “Empedokles” by Berlin artist Gerhard Marcks (1889–1981) in the entrance hall of the IG Farben Building, the bronze “Am Wasser” (1929) by Fritz Klimsch (1870–1960) in front of the casino on the Westend Campus, and the monumental mural on the first floor of the casino by Georg Heck (1897–1982), which was uncovered and restored by the University Archives.
