More than 30 scientific collections belonging to the Senckenberg Society for Nature Research are located in Frankfurt am Main. These include zoological, botanical, and paleontological/geological collections. Some of the collections have close historical ties to Goethe University, while others are currently involved in research and teaching at Goethe University through the custodians who curate them. A key goal of Senckenberg is to improve access to specimens for both science and society through digitization, and to unlock the treasure trove of data stored in its herbaria.
Today, the Senckenbergianum Herbarium comprises five locations in Frankfurt, Jena, Görlitz, Weimar, and Wilhelmshafen, with a total of 5.6 million specimens, making it one of the ten largest herbaria in the world. Here we introduce the Senckenbergianum Herbarium in Frankfurt am Main, which temporarily belonged to Goethe University, as a representative of botanical collections.
