The collection, which consists mainly of illustrated literary works, practical guides, encyclopedias, and scholarly books (a total of 100 titles with approximately 300 individual volumes from the period 1656 to 1866), is kept in the Department of Japanese Studies and is mainly used as material for research, teaching, and exhibitions on pre-modern language and literature. In the past, some of the writings, which have not yet been the subject of research and editing in Japan, have been presented in master's and doctoral theses. The collection was expanded through acquisitions between 1981 and 2000. In the future, digitization will be intensified, and funds will be raised for professional processing and provision.
The undertaking is part of a larger project in the field of digital humanities, which aims to contribute to the research areas of computerized character recognition and text analysis according to the standards of semantic network analysis.
