The German Orthopedic History and Research Museum was founded in Würzburg in 1959. Its collection has grown steadily over the past decades. At the heart of the museum is the library, which, with more than 6,000 volumes, is the largest publicly accessible collection on the history of orthopedics. Other focal points include the collection of prosthetic limbs, endoprostheses, implants, and devices. In addition to Bernhard Heine's osteotome, the museum also owns his extensive collection of bone specimens.
The museum, which is now located in the premises of the Friedrichsheim Orthopedic University Clinic in Frankfurt, has set itself the task of collecting and presenting items from the field of orthopedics that are worthy of preservation. It traces the rapid development of orthopedics in Germany since its beginnings in the early 19th century. It seeks to promote interest in the history of orthopedics through symposia on historical topics, regular publications, and conference contributions.
