The Hebrew and Jewish Studies Collection at the University Library is the largest collection of its kind in Germany and one of the most important worldwide. The collection comprises around 350,000 volumes and includes manuscripts and printed works in all languages, particularly Yiddish and Hebrew, as well as sheet music, illustrations, atlases, newspapers, and audio recordings, thus offering almost complete resources for the entire spectrum of Jewish studies.
Created in the second half of the 19th century through donations from Jewish patrons in Frankfurt, the majority of the collection survived the Nazi era unscathed. Funded by the DFG from 1949 to 2015, the Jewish Studies Specialist Information Service, established in 2016 (with the support of the DFG), continues to acquire, index, and disseminate academic material and information for research purposes. The historical holdings have been almost completely digitized and are available free of charge worldwide via the Digital Collections Judaica portal. They can also be found in supraregional portals (e.g., German Digital Library or Europeana) and via common search engines.
