The Science Garden is one of the most traditional parts of Goethe University and dates back to J.C. Senckenberg's letter of foundation in 1763. With its living collection of around 2,000 species and outdoor facilities, the garden is used for research and teaching by the departments on the Riedberg campus and is also used for teacher training with its special “School in the Science Garden” area. The development of the collection follows the current needs of research and education. A good 3 hectares have been realized in the outdoor area so far, and in the coming years, the garden will be gradually expanded eastward to a total of around 7 hectares.

The outdoor area focuses on the systematic department and the medicinal plant garden, as well as on the presentation of forest habitats from various regions. In addition, there is a “meadow orchard” as a particularly species-rich habitat that is characteristic of the region. The Science Garden is also open to the public and is becoming increasingly important for the district as a place of edification and recreation.
