Teaching Collection of the Art History Institute
- Humanities and Social Sciences
The former Teaching Collection of the Art History Institute now comprises around 23,000 media items (including approx. 15,000 illustrations and approx. 8,000 audiovisual media). Next to items from the historical collection (albumen prints, glass slides, black-and-white prints), it includes more recent teaching media (VHS, DVD, Blu-ray). Currently stored in the media library, these items are examined in courses as part of the history of knowledge and methods in the field. In this way, they have become teaching aids once again and can be used to practice aspects of media history, preservation, and (digital) indexing.
The collection also includes bundles of teaching and research materials that provide valuable insights into the beginnings of art history teaching at Goethe University. In the exhibition "Unboxing (Art) History. A Subject and its (Visual) Media. An Exhibition Marking the 110th Anniversary of the Art History Institute in Frankfurt" (Schopenhauer Studio, Frankfurt University Library), the first results of this endeavor were presented in 2025.
