In this session, Dr. Aglaia Schieke and Junior-Prof. Elena Link offer a brief introduction to the principles, relevance, and challenges of science communication, with a particular focus on the interface between research and practice. Regarding this focus, they present and discuss the key insights from the “Building Bridges: Science Communication between Research and Practice” forum (May 26–27, 2026), organized by the Rhein-Main Universities and the WissKomm Academy.

Learning Objectives:

  • Understand key principles, relevance, and challenges of science communication, especially at the research–practice interface.
  • Critically reflect on gaps and tensions between research and practical application.
  • Identify ways to translate science communication insights into practice.

 

Speakers:

Prof. Elena Link is a Junior Professor of Science Communication at the Department of Communication at Johannes Gutenberg University Mainz, where she leads the research area in science communication. Her academic work focuses on health and science communication, particularly on information-seeking and avoidance behaviors, trust in health information, and communication around medical innovations.

Dr. Aglaia Schieke is the Coordinator of the WissKomm Academy, the Competence Center for Science Communication at the Academy of Science and Literature in Mainz. After her studies in German, French and Italian Literature as well as her PhD in German Literature she focused on scientific management and science communication at the Academy of Science and Literature, where additionally to the Wisskomm Academy she is responsible for the Young Academy (the Program for excellent Postdocs and Artists) and the Class of Literature and Music.
