People exist - Finding the right attitude towards unusual people

RMU Event

Date

17 November 2026, 9:00 am – 5:00 pm CET

Location

Johannes Gutenberg University Mainz

Description

We encounter a wide variety of people in our everyday working lives. We get on well with many of them. We find working with them to be professional, balanced, and enriching. Things become critical when the proverbial chemistry is only partially right—or even missing. We may perceive these people as “choleric,” “opinionated,” “egocentric,” “arrogant,” or simply “difficult.” The list could go on and on. Under certain circumstances, we may try to avoid these people. The working relationship runs the risk of becoming more tense. Encounters, communication, and discussions become less frequent, and despite professional cooperation, this can result in conflicts escalating more easily.

Benefit:

In this event, you will learn how to deal with these “unusual” people in a calm, objective, and professional manner. You will develop strategies for dealing with anger, incomprehension, speechlessness, and sometimes even powerlessness. Learn how to change your own patterns of thinking and behavior so that they can form the basis for distant but polite cooperation.

Contents:

  • What triggers the behavior of “unusual” people in me?
  • The influence of the factual and relational levels on cooperation.
  • Examining inner attitudes and recognizing inhibiting and encouraging attitudes.
  • Self-control techniques: achieving and maintaining emotional balance.
  • Strategies for successful communication: verbal and body language.
  • Addressing conflicts and finding solutions.
  • Dealing with “attacks” and provocations in a quick-witted and friendly manner.
  • Tips for meetings and conferences.
