The ABCs of Science Communication

RMU Event

Date

11 December 2026, 1:00 pm – 5:00 pm CET

Location

Johannes Gutenberg University Mainz

Description

Workshop with Jun.-Prof. Dr. Elena Link

How can complex research be turned into a clear message? What role do target audiences, channels and formats play – and what makes science communication successful?

The first part of the workshop covers the fundamentals of science communication and provides an opportunity to critically reflect on one’s own communication. Drawing on key theories and models, we will examine science communication at the interface between science, the media and the public, and explore the opportunities and challenges associated with different forms of communication. We will also reflect on current challenges facing science communication.

The second part focuses on participants’ own communication practices. Participants will develop an understanding of what a strategic approach to science communication entails and apply these fundamentals to their own research or field of work. Using their own examples, they will reflect on communication objectives, target audiences, messages and suitable channels, and develop initial ideas for their own communication strategies.

Elena Link is a junior professor of science communication at the Institute of Journalism at Johannes Gutenberg University Mainz.
