Description
Critical thinking, as rational, reflective, and analytical thinking, is one of the tools of all sciences. It is now applied not only to linguistically articulated facts, but increasingly also to data in the form of statistics, tables, diagrams, infographics, etc. In our seminar, we teach basic knowledge and skills in argumentation, statistics, data visualisation, and cognitive biases.
In addition to these more methodological aspects, normative questions arise in times of data-driven science and society. Responsible handling of data also requires ethical knowledge and skills such as reflection on principles and typical dangers. The second part of the course focuses on data protection and privacy, transparency and access to scientific data, as well as overarching aspects of the datafication of science and society. A final look is taken at the topic of algorithmic data processing and artificial intelligence. Here, aspects such as responsibility for and discrimination by automated decisions are discussed, among other things.
